The back burner

   Alight relief for gas cylinders
Burning gas cylinders no longer face Hobson's choice between becoming a giant flamethrower or a bomb, thanks to UK engineers. Fireproofing specialists Carboline-Nullifire working with engineers from the Universities of Warwick and Coventry have developed two materials that mean gas cylinder valves seal themselves if things get too hot but don't block the gas flow under normal operation. The prototype allows gas cylinders to withstand a fire at 10000 oC for half an hour without exploding.

The developers point out that the new system also makes gas cylinders much more 'aesthetically pleasing'. Which is so obviously important in a lab isn't it?
