Distilled Web Sites
The home of the 'chemical calculator' with its built in interactive periodic table helps students - and even teachers - to quickly and accurately complete typical chemical calculations, such as balancing equations, exploring reaction stoichiometry, unit and mole conversions, working out elemental compositions and mass spec calculations, and figuring out empirical formulae. A downloadable demo is available with tutorial sessions.
Maintained by Bristol University chemist Paul May, this site takes on the monthly challenge of bringing a molecule to life. May and cohorts of eager chemical communicators have tackled some fascinating species with the likes of anatoxin, psilocybin, and DNA yet to come. Most papers are available with chemical plug-ins that allow the visitor to display three-dimensional virtual molecular models and to rotate and manipulate them with a simple mouse click or two.
The APS plugs the application of plastics. But the site also delves into the domestic, environmental and occupational problems that can arise. There's an interesting section on innovative applications of plastics in medical devices. A classroom, newsroom and sections on plastics and the environment suitably augment what might have been straight PR puff for the plastics industry.
From the makers of the primary research journal Science comes a site for upcoming scientists. There is plenty of useful information for those on the first rungs of the career ladder including a job centre, advice and feature articles.
