Tree-lined mass spectrometry
Trees provide environmental scientists with a living detector system for tracking pollutants, according to
Cameron McLeod, speaking at the RSC's Annual Conference 2000 recently.
Validating steroid tests German researchers have devised new ways to validate dope-testing of athletes, in suspicious cases.
Dendrimers make more sense Italian and German researchers have increased the sensitivity to cobalt ions of a fluorescent monodansyl compound by thirty-two times by converting it into a branching, dendrimeric, form. The discovery could lead to the development of new highly sensitive detectors for a variety of important metal ions.
Fruity chemistry The colours of flowers and fruits have always had a fascination for humans from the primitive need to find tasty and nutritious food to the sophisticated search for interesting natural products with potential medicinal and other applications.
Antony Williams (ACD/Labs):
Recent advances in NMR prediction and automated structure elucidation software
| |
Nuclear magnetic resonance is now routinely accessible to synthetic chemists. The generation of high quality NMR data including multi-dimensional experiments is no longer a rate-limiting step. Rather, the analysis of the data has become the primary hurdle for the chemist, as it has been for the skilled spectroscopist for many years. Both personal computer and web-based software tools are now available for the estimation and prediction of NMR spectra based on a structural input and the dream solution of automated structural elucidation based on spectral input is also becoming increasingly available. These tools offer to both the skilled and non-skilled NMR experimentalist much-needed assistance in data interpretation. Continue...

There were plenty of
entries for the judges to wade through and with work presented
being of the highest scientific standard the final decision
was a difficult one to make. The three winners, in order,
were Györgyi
Kovács, Department of Medicinal Chemistry, University
of Szeged, Hungary, Valentine
P. Ananikov, ND Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry,
Russian Academy of Sciences, and Oleh
Tanchak, the Department of Applied Chemical and Biological
Sciences, Ryerson Polytechnic University. Honourable mention
was given to Jiansuo Wang, Institute of Physical Chemistry
& College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Peking
University. Reactive Reports extends a hearty congratulations
to all the winners!
The ACD/Labs Scholar of
the Year 2000 is already announced! |
